WP ENGINE Company Information
Located in Austin, Texas WP Engine was founded by Jason Cohen, Ben Metcalfe and Cullen Wilson in 2010.
WP Engine is a privately held company running a world-class network infrastructure. The company also has four secure data centers all across the world. The four main data centers are located in London, Tokyo, Canada and in Midwest in the US.
WP Engine is a premium managed hosting service for websites built with WordPress. The company specialises exclusively in WordPress and WP Engine is a large-scale, highly-managed hosting service with more than 30,000 customers in 120 countries and is growing exponentially every year.
WP Engine Plans
There are currently 3 types of standard plans that WB Engine Offers and 2 types for corporations.
Benefits of WB Engine
Managed WordPress Hosting
Due to its focusing solely on WordPress solutions it has extremely benefited them and allows them to focus solely on the needs and experiences of WordPress.
Due to not having a wide variety of products to manage it's able to keep on focusing it's resources on WordPress which has allowed them not to be distracted and further it's singular goal which can be constantly seen in the expanding services and features they offer.
Due to this singular objective, its hosting is 100% compatible with WordPress. Currently, it has been able to keep track with the various WordPress releases, and it can handle the latest PHP 5 and MySQL 5 with no problem.
Since their data centers have multiple secure locations (Newark, London and Tokyo, Canada) this allows customers to make choices based on proximity.
With multi-server clusters, supersonic-fast hardware with in-RAM caching, and a content delivery network, these are the most important variables that create he fasted loaded page time in the quickest time.
Strong Reliability & Security
WP Engine does not oversell its servers. Instead it has a custom formation and then tunes them at an individual level in order to achieve reliable and powerful security.
By limiting some plugins, the probability of conflicts across plugins can be greatly deterred, so this helps to protect against accidental site crashes.
No matter what type of plan you are on, they provide daily backups and 1-click restore points.
In the unlikely event that you are compromised, WP Engine will fix it for free. Traditionally, consultants charged large amounts of money to address and fix this; however, with WP Engine you know you are in good hands.
Amazing Customer Service
No matter what issue may arise, WP Engine technical support team is available 24/7. Either through live chat or phone they will work with you to solve your issue. They can do this since they have over 100 full time WordPress experts. The great thing is that they won't just give you a generic answer but will actively engage your issue in order to find the best solution. This is because their team has quality training and has ongoing education in order to stay relevant and up to date.
Drawbacks of WB Engine
While WP Engine offers you a secure and professional hosting for your website it does not offer domain names. So if you want to own your own domain name you will have to use a third party service.
*Note: When transferring over from another hosting platform such as Blue Gator or Site Rubix be careful when closing your account. If your hosting platform and your domains are from the same provider then you might have trouble if you let your hosting expire. On occasion if you let your old hosting expire then your domain might expire as well even if you have already paid your yearly fee for the domain.
While it is true that it is extremely easy to move your site over to WP Engine’s platform using their plugin; however, just be aware that they do not actually offer to have a representative do this for you. Of course you can call the help line if you have any troubles but it will initially be up to you to migrate to WP Engine.
Hosting multiple Sites
Now, the great advantage that WP Engine gives you is that it specializes in WordPress; however, depending on your plan it can become quite costly if you are running multiple sites under certain models.
If we look at the business model, just for two sites you will be paying upwords of $200 if you are using their professional plan or $500 dollars if you are looking to use their business plan. WP Engine does support domains; however, you have options ranging from 1/10/25 domains. Now while this may seem costly the benefits and features you receive from them make it worthwhile.
While the benefits of using WP Engine are clear, what is unclear is why in the name of the WordPress God don’t they provide email! In all of their hosting packages having email isn’t included. With all that goes on with email, customers will have to look for a third party to provide this service.
Now that you know the benefits and drawbacks of WB Engine let’s take a look inside WP Engine.
Big shout out to Jeff Gilden for taking a detailed look inside of WP Engine!
So should you choose WB Engine?
While WP Engine is one of the best WordPress hosting services today, I can’t recommend it to everyone.
Of course if you are not using WordPress then this service isn’t for you.
If you are just beginning and don’t have too much traffic or investment into your site then you will be better off initially using a cheaper shared hosting service like Blue Gator.
Also, if you have multiple sites that aren’t receiving much traffic then again I would go with a cheaper option until you really get your traffic up.
Overall, WP Engine is a great quality service that stands behind what it has made.
I’m not the only one who is happy with WP Engine. Take a look at these testimonials from other customers!
“…for any business or professional blogger, WP Engine is a no brainer and great investment in your business…
– Scott Ellis, vsellis.com
I am ready for speed and really excited to start using their service. My traffic hardly requires the “supercharged” hosting they offer, but I plan to scale…
– Bret Phillips, bretphillips.com
“I didn’t think my website could be so fast before trying WP Engine! AND they have awesome support.”
– Jordy Meow, Author of WP Retina Plugin
At first I was skeptical of ditching a regular webhost or VPS, because I felt like I would be limited in what I could do. But for the purpose of running WordPress powered websites, WP Engine is great!”
– Jake Rutter, onerutter.com
“WP Engine also has some great looking tools for people who need to manage multiple WordPress sites. It’s like they designed this service for us.”
– Dalton, madebyraygun.com
“I don’t need to spend hours reading about the difference between Hypercache and WP Total Cache, or whether I should use Memcached, Varnish, a reverse proxied Nginx server, or all of the above. All that stuff’s interesting, but it’s not the best use of my time.
Basically, I’ve decided to stay with WP Engine not because they provide very expensive hosting – although it’s excellent – but because they provide a very cheap, very good, very agreeable full-time dedicated sysadmin for my blog.
Which means I can concentrate on, you know, writing it.”
– Hugh Hancock, mmomeltingpot.com
“WPEngine loads faster than anything I have tried in the past, full stop. I am extremely amazed with the server speed since the day one I shifted my host – thanks to its special server configuration and no overselling rule*. Also, it is worth noting that WHSR is running on 100% uptime until this time of writing.”
– Jerry, webhostingsecretrevealed
“$2,500 a year for blog hosting sounds a bit on the high side, but it is honestly nothing against the amount of time that I will no longer have to invest supporting this sucker. I love being out of the hosting business. I never intended on being in it in the first place — it was always just something I needed to do to write for people.”
– Patrick, kalzumeus.com
