How to Rank On Youtube: Is Ranking on Youtube Hard?
First off, ranking on Youtube is a lot easier than ranking on search engines such as Google or Bing if you know what you are doing. If you are just starting off on Youtube then you will want to follow these key points to make sure that your video will show up on the first page of Youtube.
Recently, on my other channel Nikkei Canadajin, I uploaded my very first video about how to renew your drivers license in Japan and it ranked as the fourth result in the first week of being uploaded. Now what did I do differently than others to make sure this happened?
I followed this 5 step process that allowed me to rank within one week of uploading to Youtube.
How to Rank on Youtube in 5 Easy Steps
Step One: KEYWORD RESEARCH
The first thing you want to make sure is that you perform keyword research. Keyword research is important for two reasons. The first reason is that it shows you how much traffic you are likely to generate using certain keywords. The second reason is to see your competition for that particular keyword. For example, if you have a keyword that gets less than 10 searches a month then it isn’t worth your time.
By having keyword that people actually search for * 100 monthly searches or more*, you are setting yourself up to gain traffic to your video.
On the other hand if you have a keyword that people search for but you have high competition from other people using that keyword then you might be in trouble as your video will be lost in the hundreds of thousands of other videos that use the same keyword.
The trick is to find a keyword that has a good amount of traffic but not a lot of competition. You can find this information by using keyword tools such as Jaaxy. By using keyword tools you automatically have all the information you need to decide if a particular keyword is worth using.
Step Two: TITLE DESCRIPTION
Youtube wants to know what your video is about and one of the ways it does this is through your title. By having an engaging and relevant title with the keyword in it you are allowing search engines and others to easily find and decipher what your video is about.
For example if you just use the title“Soccer” when your video is about soccer cleats then your video probably won’t get too many view. However, if instead you set your title to “The Best Soccer Cleats in 2017” then that title is more captivating and more likely to get more views.
Step Three: DESCRIPTION BOX
Most people are too lazy to use the description box to its fullest extent. Just like your title, search engines use the description box to search for the keywords that you are using to determine what kind of content you have.
I recommend putting in your keyword in the first two sentences in the description box and then also continue to write about 400 words to describe what your video is about.
This way search engines as well as others can quickly and easily discover your video and what kind of content it has.
Step 4: TAGS
Unlike keywords you want to use as many tags as possible for your video. I recommend at least 15 tags for each of your videos. Tags are how people are able to find your video on Youtube. So as long as the tags are relevant to your content you should use them to your advantage.
Right now you are probably of thinking of all the different combination of words that you can use for using tags in your video. While I also suggest doing this, I recommend seeing what tags your competitors are using in their videos.
This is completely legal and is extremely easy to do. Programs have been develop specifically for this purpose which can cost hundreds; however, I’m going to show you how to do this for free.
Step Five: HAVING AN AWESOME THUMBNAIL
Now what the average person fails to take into consideration is their thumbnail. If you have ever uploaded a video to Youtube then you know that Youtube automatically gives you a default thumbnail, basically a screenshot of some part of your video. While it can be good most of the time it is horrible. Never Never go for the automated thumbnail. Instead create a custom thumbnail which will stand out and grab the attention of your audience.
I use Canva for creating my thumbnails. It is a completely free program which gives you access to many different backgrounds, icons, fonts, logs for free. You can also import your own pictures if you want. If you are worried about watermarks, don’t be! With Canva you are able to download all the thumbnails you make without any hidden costs and it automatically creates the perfect thumbnail size for Youtube, so you don’t have to worry about resizing.
When creating thumbnails you want to use contrasting colours in order for your thumbnail to stand out.
